Exercise and Intervertebral Disc
Posted on 2012-02-28 15:19:21

Keep Exercising!!
Physical exercise has a positive effect on the formation of cells in the intervertebral discs. This is shown by a study from the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, presented at the annual meeting of the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS), which is currently taking place in Gothenburg. Degenerating discs may be responsible for some cases of low back pain. If exercise helped keep discs healthy in rats, think about what it can do for you. Have fun!

Chocolate and Heart Health

Lots of Chocolate May Seriously Protect Your Heart!
Happy Valentine's Day!!! Maybe chocolate is good for your heart all year round. High levels of chocolate consumption might be associated with a one third reduction in the risk of developing heart disease, suggests a study published online in the British Medical Journal. Don't forget - while good for your heart, too much might be bad for your waist. Enjoy.

FODMAP Diet For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

The FODMAP Diet for Irritable Bowel Syndrome??????
Peter Gibson, MD, head of the Eastern Clinical School at Monash University in Victoria, Australia has discovered a diet that may help dramatically reduce the suffering of his irritable bowel patients. He is a proponent and cofounder of a low-FODMAP diet. It is his claim that poorly absorbed short-chain carbohydrates, which are small molecules that are potentially osmotically active and rapidly fermentable, are to blame for gut symptoms such as bloating, wind, abdominal pain, and changes in bowel habits.
What is FODMAP??? FODMAP stands for fermentable, oligosaccharides (including the fructo-oligosaccharides found in wheat, rye, onion, garlic, leeks, and artichokes, and the galacto-oligosaccharides found in beans, chick peas, and lentils), disaccharides (milk products except hard cheese), monosaccharides (excess fructose, fruits that contain more fructose than glucose, honey, apples, pears, mangos, high-fructose corn syrup), and polyols (sugar alcohols including sorbitol, mannitol, stone fruits, apples and pears, mushrooms, cauliflower, snow peas, maltitol, and xylitol).
The bottom line: If you have received a professional diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, try avoiding these foods and see if your symptoms get better. Can't hurt.
Cake for Breakfast?!?!?!

Cake for Breakfast
2/7/12 — A diet where you can eat cookies and cake? I bet you are paying attention now. Believe it or not, researchers from Tel Aviv University have found that dessert, as part of a balanced 600-calorie breakfast that also includes proteins and carbohydrates, can help dieters to lose more weight -- and keep it off in the long run. I am going to have to personally put this to the test.
